What did you notice about yourself immediately that other people may not notice readily?
Who was the first to notice something âdifferentâ about you? What did they notice?
How do people get to know how you are doing? What would be your preferred way of knowing and showing that?

Accentuate whatâs wanted (positive changes) by juxtaposing whatâs not wanted (negative changes).
Mommy, whoâs your favorite?â I used to ask every now and then.
âYou are, my baby.â
Iâd then go about my day with my nose up a bit and my chest puffed out a bit. My two siblings were too old to be playing my childâs game, but I knew I was her favorite. Because she told me so. Then one day I was playing in the living room while my brother was helping Mom in the kitchen.
âMom,â my brother said.
âYes, my love?â she responded while her whisk played the edges of a metal bowl.
âSo, whoâs your favorite?â
What?
I stopped my play and turned my head just enough to tune in to their conversation. I already knew I was her favorite, but my ears leaned in to hear the answer.
âYou are, my love,â she said.
What?
My heart sank. What was this feeling? It felt like Iâd just lost something. I ran to the kitchen in distress.
âM-a-a-a-a-a-h-m...â
âOh, hey there, my baby,â she said, turning toward me as I held up my arms to wrap around her hips. She rubbed my head with her elbow, trying to not get flour on my baby-blue summer dress. I buried half my face in her checkered red apron that smelled faintly of vanilla, squeezing her as tightly as I could and cutting one eye at my brother to see if he was watching. He wore a slight smirk as he peeled potatoes, like nothing had happened.
âWhatâs going on, my baby?â Mom asked, hugging my head between her waist and elbow.
âNothing. Iâm just tired,â I whimpered as I rubbed my face on her side.
âIs everything okay?â she asked in a soothing tone.
âHmph!â I whined a bit louder than intended.
âHmm...â She pulled away from me and bent down so her face was close to my face. âWhatâs going on?â
âCan I speak to you in private, please?â I mumbled, turning away from my brother.
âNow? Is this very important? Iâm in the middle of making your favorite cookie dough.â
âYes, it is!â I said, stomping my foot.
âOkay then. Calvin, would you please excuse us?â
âSure, Mom,â he said, sounding chipper. He got up from his chair and left the kitchen.
âYes?â Mom asked, resting one elbow on the table and looking at me with raised eyebrows. I looked up at her when I heard a door closing.
âMommy, Iâm your favorite, right?â
âYes, you are, my baby,â she said, her eyes rounding to crescents.
âBut you just told Calvin he was your favorite. Whoâs your favorite? Me or him?â My heart was racing. I needed an answer. She needed to choose.
âDonât be frowny,â she said and kissed my forehead. âMy baby, both of you. All of you. Whoever is in front of me is my favorite.
